8/30/21
GENERAL:
Fixes/Improvements:
- Improved the way that Samples in Keymaps are selected for playback when changing tuning in cents from the Global MAIN 1 Tune parameter, or the Program Edit COMMON Intonation Map. The system is now more likely to change the tuning of a sample in a key range, rather than selecting a different sample in the Keymap. This fixes a problem where small changes in tuning could cause the sample selection to change unnecessarily. For pitched programs, tuning changes will sound more natural. For drum programs, this prevents a problem where small tuning changes could cause a different drum sample to play.
- FX Edit: Fixed panning for FX preset boxes 366 and 367. Previously, signals panned to the right were not heard.
- Fixed a problem where Note Off messages from the Arpeggiator were going to all MIDI Destinations. Now they only go to the selected Global MIDI Destination.
- Fixed a problem that could cause pressing the PANIC double button press in Multi Mode to make Programs sound incorrect when returning to Program Mode.
- General bug fixes that improve system stability.
GLOBAL MODE:
Features:
- Storage Page: LOAD: Import SYX files. The Forte SE can load .SYX files containing FM Programs from classic 6 operator FM synthesizers. When the Global Mode User Type is set to Advanced, imported FM Programs can be edited in Program Mode and combined with additional layers, VAST synthesis features and FX. Imported .SYX files appear as new Programs in Program Mode. (Note: FM Programs/Layers can be edited on the keyboard, but only basic parameters and FX can be adjusted. For full FM editing, the SoundTower editor must be used. FM editing will be available in an upcoming release of the SoundTower editor.)
- Maps Page: Added the Xmit Velocity M parameter. The Xmit Velocity M parameter allows you to select a velocity map for MIDI notes transmitted from the USB or MIDI Out ports. This is useful for adjusting the overall velocity sensitivity for MIDI notes sent to external MIDI instruments. Different maps generate different MIDI velocity values for the same physical key strike velocity. The default map (Linear) provides the widest range of velocity expression. The Light and Hard maps make it increasingly easier or harder to produce high MIDI velocity values for the same key strike velocity (with Light3 being the easiest, Hard3 being the hardest). See the Velocity Map section in the Forte SE Musician's Guide for a description of each map.
- MIDI Page: When the Global Mode User Type is set to Advanced, the Recv Xport (Receive Transport) and Xmit Xport (Transmit Transport) parameters appear (these parameters replace the old Recv MMC parameter). Use these parameters to enable or disable receiving and sending of System Real-Time and MMC (MIDI Machine Control) Play and Stop transport messages to/from the Forte SE's MIDI or USB ports. This allows you to use an external sequencer sending System Real-Time or MMC messages to start or stop the currently selected song in Forte SE's Song Mode, or to use the Forte SE's PLAY and STOP soft buttons in Song Mode to start or stop an external sequencer (if it is able to receive these messages).
- Audio Input Page: Added the Noise Gate parameter. The rear panel AUDIO IN jack has a noise gate that prevents low level system noise from being heard in some cases (such as when nothing is plugged into the jack, or when something is plugged in but not being used). In previous OS versions, the noise gate was always enabled. The Noise Gate parameter can be used to turn the noise gate On or Off. Setting Noise Gate to Off is useful for monitoring signals with a wide dynamic range (such as guitar). For example, when Noise Gate is set to On, guitar notes may be muted before the note has fully decayed to silence. To prevent the unwanted muting of low level signals, set Noise Gate to Off. If the AUDIO IN jack is not being used for low level signals, set Noise Gate to On to prevent extra system noise. Note: When loading a backup file of user objects containing a Master Table created with a previous software release, the Noise Gate parameter will be set to Off. If the AUDIO IN jack is not being used, set Noise Gate to On to prevent extra system noise.
Fixes/Improvements:
- Storage Page: LOAD: Favorites are now being properly restored when loading a user backup file.
- Samples Memory Map Page: PRVIEW: Sample Preview is working properly now.
MULTI MODE:
Fixes/Improvements:
- User Multis from the Forte 4.0 release, the SP6 1.50 release, the PC4, and the K2700 can now be loaded. Zones greater than 8 will not be loaded.
- Fixed a problem that was causing the Multi real time controller info to show the same info for all Zones/Channels. Now when moving a controller, info is properly shown for each active Zone/Channel that has a controller assigned.
- Fixed a problem that could cause the Sustain pedal to become stuck on when using a Continuous Switch (Half Damper) Sustain pedal.
- Multi Edit: Overview Page: When the Global Mode User Type is set to Advanced, you can now press the Favorites 5 button to toggle between viewing Volume and Pan Entry values or Exit values.
Exit Volume (xVol) and Exit Pan (xPan) are MIDI Volume (CC 7) and MIDI Pan (CC 10) messages that can be sent to each Zone's MIDI channel when exiting the current Multi by selecting another Multi or Program.
Exit Volume and Exit Pan should typically be set to a value of "None", which sends no message. To select a value of None, scroll below 0 or type -1 followed by the ENTER button. Setting Exit Volume or Exit Pan to 0-127 can be useful for advanced MIDI configurations and when controlling external MIDI instruments or software. For example, an Exit Volume message of 0 could silence an external MIDI instrument when exiting a Multi. For Zones which are playing local programs, Exit Volume should typically be set to None to avoid unwanted volume changes when selecting Multis.
- Multi Edit: Fixed a problem that could cause controls to become unresponsive when changing pages while holding the ENTER button.
PROGRAM MODE:
Features:
- Program Edit: When the Global Mode User Type is set to Advanced, new VAST Algorithm Functions can be accessed: 2-block FM Oscillators: FM Operator, FM Saw Operator, FM Tri Operator. (These functions are separate from FM Layers and can be fully edited within the keyboard.)
Fixes/Improvements:
- User Programs from the Forte 4.0 release, the SP6 1.50 release, the PC4, and the K2700 can now be loaded, including FM Layers. (When the Global Mode User Type is set to Advanced, FM Layers can be edited on the keyboard, but only basic parameters and FX can be adjusted. For full FM editing, the SoundTower editor must be used. FM editing will be available in an upcoming release of the SoundTower editor.) Some factory Keymaps and Samples from the Forte and K2700 are not available in the Forte SE, and the Forte SE has less user Sample space, which may result in programs with Not Found Keymaps or Samples. In this case, Programs may need to be edited to select replacement Keymaps or Samples.
- New Program: 995 FM Template.
- Program Edit: Fixed a crash that could occur when deleting a Layer used as an Alt Input for another Layer.
SONG MODE:
Fixes/Improvements:
- In Song Mode, when a track destination is set to USB or MIDI, Volume/Pans CCs are now properly sent to the selected USB/MIDI destination when changing Volume/Pan values on the Song MAIN or MIXER page. Previously these CCs were only transmitted locally.

GLOBAL MODE:
Features:
- SONG - A built-in sequencer (Song Mode) can now be accessed by pressing the SONG soft button in Global mode. Song Mode contains a 16 track MIDI sequencer which allows you to record and edit multitimbral songs. Song Mode in the Forte SE is similar to Song Mode in Kurzweil's PC3. For details on Song Mode, see the Song Mode chapter in the PC3 Musician's Guide, available at kurzweil.com/downloads. An updated version of the Forte SE Musician's Guide will be published soon with full details on the Forte SE's Song Mode.
- AUD-IN - Audio Input FX: The previous 'Audio In' parameter has been removed from the Global Mode Main page, and replaced by the new Audio Input page. Press the AUD-IN soft button to access the Audio Input page. The Audio Input page allows you to adjust the input gain of the rear panel 1/8" (3.5mm) input using the "Level" parameter (this replaces the replaces the old Audio In parameter on the Global Mode Main page). Now you can also choose an FX chain to apply to the input signal, and enable or disable the use of any existing FX Mods in the selected Chain.
- MAIN / Sound Sel - ('Surf-n-Select') The "SoundSel" parameter has a new 'EnterButtn' setting. When the User Type parameter on the Global Mode Main page is set to Advanced, the SoundSel parameter appears. The EnterButtn setting allows you to scroll through the Program or Multi list without immediately loading the selected Program or Multi. This allows you to find the next Program or Multi to load without interrupting the Program or Multi that is currently being played. When scrolling through the Program or Multi list, Programs and Multis will appear with their names in parenthesis to indicate that they have not been loaded. Press the Enter button to load the currently selected Program or Multi. When switching to Program or Multi mode (either by using the Mode buttons or Favorites) the current Program or Multi will be loaded automatically. When EnterButtn is selected, the Program/Multi 1-16 buttons work as if SoundSel was set to "ID number" (any ID number can be entered with the numeric pad, instead of only selecting the 16 IDs of the current category).
- MAIN / S.Buttons - A new parameter 'S.Buttons' allows you to set the function of the leftmost soft buttons 1 and 2 in Program/Multi Mode. The default "Octave" setting will set the soft buttons as the standard Octav- and Octav+ buttons. The "Arp" setting will change the soft buttons to an Arpeggiator Latch button, which performs the Latch function of the Arpeggiator. The Rec/Play setting changes the two leftmost soft buttons in Program Mode to "Rec" (record ready) and "PlyStp" (Play/Stop). These buttons allow you to control the currently selected Song Mode song from Program Mode. When an empty New Song is selected in Song Mode, these buttons allow you to quickly record ideas into a new song from Program Mode. Press the Rec soft button to arm the sequencer (a.k.a. record ready), and use the PlyStp soft button to start and stop the sequencer. The top bar of the Program Mode display shows the current state of the sequencer (Stopped, Rec Ready, Recording, or Playing). When S.Buttons is set to Rec/Play, the two leftmost soft buttons in Multi Mode will be Octav- and Octav+.
- DELETE - A new 'Select' button has been added. Multiple objects can now be selected and deleted at the same time. Delete processing times are now faster as well.
- MIDI / Recv MMC - When the User Type parameter on the Global Mode Main page is set to Advanced, the "Recv MMC" parameter appears on the Global/MIDI page. Use the Recv MMC parameter to enable or disable receiving of MIDI Machine Control messages sent to the Forte SE's MIDI In or USB ports. When Recv MMC is set to Off, the Forte SE will ignore MMC messages. When Recv MMC is set to On, the Forte SE's Song Mode will respond to MMC messages for Song Play and Song Stop. This allows you to use an external sequencer to start or stop the currently selected song in Forte SE's Song Mode, as well as set the bar/beat location of the current song.
- FILE / LOAD: The object Load function has a new feature "Fill from ID". When the User Type parameter on the Global Mode Main page is set to Advanced, pressing the Storage Mode Load "Fill" soft button will show the "Fill from ID" dialog. When you select a saved object file to load, "Fill from ID" allows you to choose the ID number at which you would like to begin loading objects. This allows you to load user objects to specific IDs, instead of always loading to the unused IDs starting at ID 1025. This can be useful for loading saved user objects into category based ID ranges. For example, using Fill from ID starting at ID 1041 will load program objects into the User E.Piano Category.
Fixes/Improvements:
- FILE / LOAD - Fixed a problem where attempting to load objects past ID 2047 would show the wrong error message.
- FILE - Fixed a problem where the Storage Active LED would sometimes not light up when accessing a computer or USB device.
- FILE - Fixed a problem where storing or loading individual objects could store/load dependent objects, even if "No" was pressed on the "Save/Load dependent objects?" prompt.
- When the Global Mode SoundSel parameter is set to "ID number", the LEDs for the Program/Multi 1-16 buttons no longer change based on the currently selected program ID in Program and Multi Mode.

- When saving a Multi and selecting an ID to save to, the Category buttons can now be used to select the first ID of a Category, even if the Global Mode "Sound Sel" Parameter is set to "ID number". Previously this only worked if the Global Mode "Sound Sel" Parameter was set to "Category".
- Edit: Pressing Favorite buttons will no longer exit the Save or Rename pages.
PROGRAM MODE:
Fixes/Improvements:
- Edit: The current layer number is now shown on the Help page.
- Edit: Fixed a bug where saving an Arp preset could change the Program name.
- Edit: KB3: Fixed: Previously, after saving an Arp pattern to a new ID, the old ID number would still be displayed.
- When saving a Program and selecting an ID to save to, the Category buttons can now be used to select the first ID of a Category, even if the Global Mode "Sound Sel" Parameter is set to "ID number". Previously this only worked if the Global Mode "Sound Sel" Parameter was set to "Category".

GLOBAL MODE:
Fixes/Improvements:
- NEW "KB3Trig" parameter: this determines whether KB3 organ notes are triggered by the high or low velocity switch of each key.
When set to "Low" : each key must be pressed all the way down to trigger a note.
When set to "High" : notes are triggered near the top of the key travel. This permits faster note triggering because each key only has to be pressed down slightly, however this can also result in unwanted false triggers.
The default setting is "Low", which generally produces better results for most playing styles.
