Greetings denizens of the Kurzweil realm! I would like to share an
interesting programming feat with you, which I developed after a lot of talk on the K2000 mailing list about a Max Headroom stuttering effect. The twist is that it is done in LiveMode. This stutter effect is actually a bit different from the basic max headroom thing. It's quite a bit more insane. It was derived from some Setups on the KDFX Accessory Disk that use the Arpeggiator to play LiveMode notes, and thus allow crazy real-time manipulation such as pitch shifting and timed reverse playback! Here's what to do:

1. Go to the Sample page, turn LiveMode On. Make sure you have some input connected, like a CD or something.

2. Make sure the system's Tempo is something reasonable, say, 120BPM.

3. Go to Setup Mode, select Setup 97 Control Setup, hit EDIT.

4. On the CH/PRG page, select Program 749 LiveMode Default, and hit EDIT. (If you play a few notes, you should hear snippets of your incoming signal coming thru whenever you hold a key down.)

5. On the KEYMAP page, set:
PlayBackMode: BiDirect
AltControl: MWheel (or whatever controller you will use)
AltMethod: Continous.

6. On the AMPENV page, increase both the Att1 and Rel1 times from .02 to .06.

7. EXIT and Save the new Program. (Now you are back in the Setup editor.)

8. Go to the ARPEG page, and set:
Active: On
Latch: Pedals
Duration: 100%

9. Go to the FOOTSW page, and set:
FtSw1: Moment, ArpLatch (control source #119). (This and the Pedals mode just lets you use your Sustain pedal to keep the arpeggiation going after you play a note, so your hands are free.)

10. Finally, you will want a way to control the speed of the arpeggiation. You've got two options: a) If you have the newest OS (4.21 beta) you can utilize the new ArpBeats control source! Go to the SLID/2 page and set: SliderH: ArpBeats (ctl src #41), Scale:15%, Add:2, Curv:Lin, Enter:2, Exit:None. (Of course, you don't have to use Slider H... that's just what I used.) --OR--
  b) If you have an older OS, you can use Tempo to control the arp speed. Go to the SLID/2 page and set: SliderH: Tempo (ctl src #35), Scale:90%, Add:5, Curv:Lin, Enter:5, Exit:None. If you choose this method, you should go back to the ARPEG page and set the Beats parameter to 1/32.

11. EXIT and Save the Setup.

12. Play C4 (you can use the pedal to hold the arpeggiation) and use the MWheel and SliderH to stutter/mangle your input. The MWheel is the real mangler, and SliderH the rate control. If you play notes other than C4, well, you can check it out for yourself.

This MP3 is a well-known song mutated by me (as a demo) in real-time using this Setup, straight from the CD, thru the K2500, onto a DAT. Nothing was done to the recording afterwards except converting it into an MP3.
