How can I select Programs via MIDI?

Answer:

Here is what the SP6 needs to receive when using Bank and Program changes to select Programs via MIDI:

  1. by default*, the SP6 uses MIDI Bank message cc#32 (aka Bank LSB) value = 0-127, to send/receive bank info.*(Bank Mode: Ctl 0/32 – as set in the Global menu)
  2. following the Bank message, a standard Program Change is used value= 0-127 to select the desired program from within the designated bank.

The table below shows the MIDI Bank (column 1) and Program Change (column 2) values needed to select any given SP6 Program (column 4) via MIDI. Note all MIDI banks are 128 entries deep:

Loading Compatible Object File Types

Aside from loading objects from its own .SP6 files, the SP6 can load sounds and objects from other instruments.

In some cases object parameters may need to be edited by the user after loading. See each object file section below for details when loading file types other than .SP6.

Objects from most of the recent Kurzweil models should sound and function exactly the same as on the original instruments (except in cases where unavailable physical controllers change the sound or function). Objects from older legacy Kurzweil instruments can often sound and function very closely or exactly the same as on the original instruments.

Loading K2700 (.K27), Forte (.FOR) and PC4 (.PC4) Object Files

When loading K2700/Forte/PC4 objects, some Programs and Keymaps may not be compatible if they use user samples, or if they use factory samples that are not available on the SP6.

Loading Legacy Program/Keymap/Sample Object Files

When loading objects from .P3K, .K26, .K25, or .KRZ files, some objects may not be compatible if they use user samples.

Loading Legacy K2 Series Object Files (K26, .K25, .KRZ)

When loading objects from K26, .K25, or .KRZ files, objects are converted to SP6 object types. Some object parameters cannot be converted, and some objects may not be compatible if they use user samples.

All K2 series Keymap objects can be loaded, some parameters will be converted to SP6 specific parameters.

Most K2 series Program objects can be loaded. FX cannot be converted.

The K2 Program Editor Keymap page sample skipping parameter (SmpSkp) cannot be loaded, so ROM samples can only be transposed upward by one octave.

A small number of DSP algorithms and functions (some filters, oscillators, etc.) cannot be loaded.

KB3 programs created with a K2500 or K2600 cannot be loaded, however the SP6 contains a variety of KB3 programs which can easily be modified and edited.

Triple Mode programs created with the K2600 cannot be loaded.

All K series Setup objects can be loaded and converted to Multis. FX cannot be converted and must be edited after loading.

Question:
What pedals can I use with my Artis / Artis 7 / Artis SE / Forte SE / SP6?

Answer:

Single Switch Pedals

The instrument ships with one KP-1 Switch Pedal however any standard foot switch pedal (with 1/4″ mono connection) will be compatible. Polarity is a non-issue as the instrument checks the pedal polarity on power up and calibrates itself accordingly. For this to work, be sure to plug the switch pedal in before turning on the instrument, and do not step on the pedal during the boot up process. Doing otherwise can lead to the pedal working in reverse or not at all. If that occurs, simply power down, be sure the pedal is fully connected, then power back up without touching the pedal.


Dual-Switch Pedal Inputs

The instrument supports connecting two switch pedals into each switch pedal input. You can connect a dual switch pedal with a single 1/4″ stereo plug (not sold by Kurzweil) or employ a “Y” adapter (stereo (M) to dual-mono (F)) to connect two standard/single pedals to each input jack. Doing so would provide a total of four switch pedals. Again remember to make all switch-pedal connections with the instrument powered off.


Half-Damper Pedals

The instrument* also supports connecting half-damper pedals (sold separately) to either of the switch pedal inputs.

The Kurzweil KP-1H half-damper pedal is the recommended pedal and is available via any Kurzweil dealer.

In addition, there are several other manufacturers of half-damper pedals on the market. Not all are compatible or interchangeable.

KORG pedals are compatible with the Forte.

ROLAND and YAMAHA pedals are not compatible.

(*Note: Artis/Artis 7/Artis SE users: Half-damper is for MIDI output only. It does not effect internal sounds)


Continuous Controller Pedals (CC Pedal)

The instrument requires a CC Pedal with a TRS 1/4″ connector and 10k linear potentiometer, such as the Kurzweil CC-1 (sold separately). Most manufacturers EXCEPT Yamaha and Korg make pedals with the same specifications and should work. Yamaha and Korg pedals typically use an exponential potentiometer and therefore will not work correctly.

CC-1 Wiring Spec

The Control Pedal must be wired to a single stereo (TRS) 1/4″ plug as follows:

  • Wiper to tip connection of 1/4″ plug
  • Top end of resistance element to Ring connection
  • Bottom end of resistance to Sleeve connection

How can I set up a metronome for keyboard practice?

Answer:

Technically, the SP6 does not have a dedicated metronome however you can construct a Multi where one zone triggers a percussion sound (like a hi hat or clave for example) using the Arpgeggiator to serve as a practice click.

Here are the steps:

  1. In Program mode, select a drum kit – for ex. here we selected program #233 – then press EDIT:

  2. Press the Channel/Page UP button to select the Arpeggiator page and set the Latch mode to ‘AutoHold’ and Beats to “1/4”:

  3. Press the Arp On/Off button to activate the Arp:

  4. Press SAVE, then press the Channel/Page UP button to access the program renaming screen. Using the alphanumeric keypad and Previous/Next buttons rename the program “Click”.

  5. Press SAVE again to confirm, saving this edited program to a free user ID slot. For ex., here we saved our “Click” program to ID#1025:

  6. Now select the program you wish to use for practice – for example here we selected program #1 Dyn 9ft Grand:

  7. Press the PREVIOUS and NEXT buttons simultaneously to access the “SPLIT or LAYER” tool page.

  8. If not already selected, use the PREVIOUS -or- NEXT buttons to select “Split” (as shown below), then press the ENTER button.

  9. Using common selection methods, select the newly created “Click” program (from step 5 above) as the program for zone 2:

  10. Press SAVE to store the Split Multi to any free user ID. Ignore the Multi name for now. We will rename it later.

  11. With the newly created split multi now selected on screen, press EDIT then press the Channel/Page UP button to select the ‘Key/Velocity’ page (3/11). On this page set the key range for zone 1 (the piano) to A#0 – to – G9. Set the key range for zone 2 (the ‘Click’) to C-1 – to – A0. This will limit the click sound to the lowest note on the keyboard (something you would not realistically play anyway). This will be the trigger key for the metronome:

    Shortcut: to enter a note value, highlight the desired field, press+hold ENTER then physically strike the desired note on the piano keyboard.

  12. Press the Channel/Page UP button to select the ‘Transpose/Bend’ page (4/11). On this page set the Xpose (Transpose) for zone 2 (Click) to +84ST. This makes striking key A0 actually sound A7 (7 octaves above) where a clave sample resides. Of course you can chose any percussion sound you prefer. Just experiment with various transpose values.

  13. Press the Channel/Page UP button to select the ‘FX’ page (5/11). On this page set the FX for zone 2 (Click) to “N”. (ie No)

  14. Press the Channel/Page UP button to select the ‘Buttons’ page (6/11). On this page set the Arp for zone 1 to “No”.

  15. Press the Arp On/Off button to activate the Arp:

  16. Press SAVE, then press the Channel/Page UP button to access the Multi renaming screen. Using the alphanumeric keypad and Previous/Next buttons rename the Multi “Piano Practice” or similar.

  17. Press SAVE again to confirm, saving this Multi to a free user ID slot. For ex., here we saved our “Piano Practice” Multi to ID#1025:


Usage Tips:

When you first select this Multi, strike the lowest note on the keyboard (A0) to start the metronome.
Stop and/or restart the metronome by pressing the Zone 2 mute button.
Control the volume of the click using the Zone 2 volume knob
(be sure you have Shift Row 1 selected).
Adjust the tempo using the Tap Tempo button and/or by editing the Multi.

Answer:

Here are the steps:

  1. Select the desired Multi. For our example we are selecting factory Multi #8 EP & E-Bass:

  3. Press the Page Down button three times (3x) to select the ‘Controllers’ page (9/11):

  4. Use the data knob to set the “Ctl” field to “Delay” or “Reverb”** – whichever you wish to adjust – in our example below we have chosen to adjust the “Reverb”:

    **Tip: short cut to select a controller – with the “Ctl” field highlighted, press+hold ENTER then twist the desired knob (remember there are 3 rows so SHIFT accordingly first to choose the correct knob)

  5. Press the +/Next button to select the “Value” field. Then use the data wheel to choose the desired “Value” (range 0-127):This sets the initial master Reverb send level for the entire Multi. In our example below we are setting this value to “7”.

    If content with the setting, press Save (step 8 below) and you are done. That level will be recalled next time you select this Multi.

  6. (optional) If, on the other hand, you desire slightly different effect levels per zone, use the “Scale” parameter to tailor a given zone’s FX amount. The Scale parameter is multiplied against the fixed “Value” setting above.For instance, zones set to 100% scale will have the full value as set by the “Value” parameter above. Zones set to 0% scale will have no effect. Zones set to 50% scale will have half the amount, and so on. In our example below we are scaling zone 2 (the bass) to 84%, so it will have slightly less reverb applied than our EP in Zone 1:

    Note, there will be a slight pause and message displayed (“Reexpanding Multi”) when adjusting the scale. Following, the newly chosen value will take effect.

  7. As needed, go back to step 4 and repeat to adjust the Delay and/or zones Zones.
  8. Press Save when done to store to a User location.

How can I create a split keyboard Multi?

Answer:

Here is the basic flow for the creation of a split Multi:

  1. Starting in Program Mode, select a Program for the right hand of the Split – for ex below we have selected piano program #6 “Studio Grand 7ft”:

  2. Press the PREVIOUS and NEXT buttons simultaneously to access the “SPLIT or LAYER” tool page.

  3. If not already selected, use the PREVIOUS -or- NEXT buttons to select “Split” (as shown below), then press the ENTER button.

  4. On the “Split” Page, Zone 2 is selected with a default “212 P-Bass” Program selected for the left hand of the Split. As needed, use the ALPHA WHEEL or CATEGORY buttons to select a different Program for the left hand of the Split.

  5. (OPTIONAL) Press the CHANNEL/PAGE up button to navigate to the Mixer page (2/3) where you can adjust the Volume and Panning for each zone. As needed, use the PREVIOUS or NEXT buttons to select each parameter, and the ALPHA WHEEL or NUMERIC buttons to change the values:

  6. (OPTIONAL) Press the CHANNEL/PAGE up button to navigate to the Split Key Range page (3/3) where you can adjust the Low and High key boundaries for each zone. As needed, use the PREVIOUS or NEXT buttons to select each parameter, and the ALPHA WHEEL or NUMERIC buttons to change the values:

    TIP: to make selecting the desired key faster, highlight the field in question then press+hold ENTER and strike the desired piano key.

  7. Press the SAVE button to save your Split as a Multi:

  8. (OPTIONAL) To rename the Multi, press the CHANNEL/PAGE up button to navigate to the Name page (2/2). Use the PREVIOUS and NEXT buttons to move the cursor to each character. Change the current character by using the ALPHA WHEEL, or use the keypad function of the CATEGORY buttons to type a character (full details on character entry can be found in the manual on pg 2-12).Press SAVE once and the desired name is input:

  9. Use the PREVIOUS / NEXT buttons, the ALPHA WHEEL and/or NUMERIC buttons to designate the User ID # to save your Multi to (User ID range = 1025-2048).Press the SAVE button to finalize the saving of your Multi:

    Done.

  10. To later recall this Multi, press MULTI (if not already in Multi mode), then Press USER and use the PREVIOUS / NEXT buttons, the ALPHA WHEEL and/or NUMERIC buttons to call up the ID chosen in step 9 above.

    TIP: You can also opt to save this Multi as a Favorite for even quicker recall.


Power User Tips:

Once you have built your basic Multi, you may want to refine it further by EDITing the Multi directly. To start select your Multi, then press EDIT.

    • To create more Multis in this same vein (templates):
      – As needed, press the CHANNEL/PAGE up or down buttons to navigate to the Main page (1/11). Use the PREVIOUS or NEXT buttons to select the desired zone, then use the ALPHA WHEEL and/or keypad to change the Program selection. For ex., below we are changing our bass sound to 219 MiniFunk:

      – Repeat for additional zones as needed.

      – Re-save to a NEW ID location, effectively making a copy with just the new sound selection(s) made but maintaining all the other established parameter settings (split points, pedals, etc).

 

    • Transpose a Zone:
      – As needed, press the CHANNEL/PAGE up or down buttons to navigate to the Transpose/Bend page (4/11). Use the PREVIOUS or NEXT buttons to select the desired zone and ‘Xpose’ parameter field, then use the ALPHA WHEEL and/or keypad to change the value – note Xpose is in semitones (ST). For ex., below we are transposing Zone 2 up one octave (12ST):

 

    • Setting Zone Volumes and Pans:As needed, press the CHANNEL/PAGE up or down buttons to navigate to the Mixer page (2/11). Use the PREVIOUS or NEXT buttons to select the desired zone and parameter field, then use the ALPHA WHEEL and/or keypad to change the value.Volume range = 0-127;Pan range = 0-127 (0=hard left / 64=center / 127=hard right):

 

    • Triggering external MIDI devices:As needed, press the CHANNEL/PAGE up or down buttons to navigate to the Channel page (10/11). Use the PREVIOUS or NEXT buttons to select the desired zone and parameter field, then use the ALPHA WHEEL to change the value.- The “Destination” for each zone can be set to either:
        • ‘LOCAL’ (for playing internal SP6 sounds).
        • ‘MIDI’ (for triggering external devices connected via MIDI cable).
        • ‘USB’ (for triggering software on your computer connected via USB cable).

      …or any combination of these 3 routing choices.

      For example, below we have set zone 1 to trigger an external MIDI device exclusively while zones 2-4 trigger locally and externally, both via MIDI and USB-MIDI.

 

    • KB3 Programs in Multi Mode:Only ONE KB3 program can be used at a time as determined by the KB3 Channel parameter (KB3 Chan). As needed press the CHANNEL/PAGE up or down buttons to navigate to the Common page (11/11). Use the PREVIOUS or NEXT buttons to select the desired channel to use for playing KB3 programs – the default is channel 1:

      When a KB3 program is properly selected (meaning the Zone channel # matches the designated KB3 Chan) it will appear as follows on the Main page – note the [KB3] icon between the Zone # and Program name:

      When a KB3 program is improperly selected (meaning the Zone channel # does NOT match the designated KB3 Chan) it will appear as follows on the Main page – note the [KB3] icon between the Zone # and Program name is now missing – in such a case you will hear the last valid non-KB3 program sounding:

      As you can only play ONE KB3 program at a time, this means you CANNOT have two KB3-generated organs playing simultaneously. So in order to create any sort of dual-manual B3 Multi this means either:
      1) Using one of the two non-KB3 B3-style presets as your second organ: #53 “VAST-ly Organ” -or- #54 “VAST Bars” (these are VAST/sample-generated B3s and thus not bound by the same constrains as KB3);

      -OR-

      2) Trigger an external module or VI as your secondary B3 (using the techniques detailed above on triggering external MIDI devices).

Question:
How can I create a layered keyboard Multi?

Answer:
Here is the basic flow for the creation of a layered Multi:

  1. Starting in Program Mode, select a Program for the primary layer – for ex below we have selected piano program #6 “Studio Grand 7ft”:

  2. Press the PREVIOUS and NEXT buttons simultaneously to access the “SPLIT or LAYER” tool page.

  3. As needed, use the PREVIOUS -or- NEXT buttons to select “Layer” (as shown below), then press the ENTER button.

  4. On the “Layer” Page, Zone 2 is selected with a default “69 Adagio Tutti 8ves” Program selected for the layer. As needed, use the ALPHA WHEEL or CATEGORY buttons to select a different Program for the layer.

  5. (OPTIONAL) Press the CHANNEL/PAGE up button to navigate to the Mixer page (2/3) where you can adjust the Volume and Panning for each zone. As needed, use the PREVIOUS or NEXT buttons to select each parameter, and the ALPHA WHEEL or NUMERIC buttons to change the values:

  6. (OPTIONAL) Press the CHANNEL/PAGE up button to navigate to the Split Key Range page (3/3) where you can adjust the Low and High key boundaries for each zone. As needed, use the PREVIOUS or NEXT buttons to select each parameter, and the ALPHA WHEEL or NUMERIC buttons to change the values:

    TIP: to make selecting the desired key faster, highlight the field in question then press+hold ENTER and strike the desired piano key.

  7. Press the SAVE button to save your Split as a Multi:

  8. (OPTIONAL) To rename the Multi, press the CHANNEL/PAGE up button to navigate to the Name page (2/2). Use the PREVIOUS and NEXT buttons to move the cursor to each character. Change the current character by using the ALPHA WHEEL, or use the keypad function of the CATEGORY buttons to type a character (full details on character entry can be found in the manual on pg 2-12).Press SAVE once and the desired name is input:

  9. Use the PREVIOUS / NEXT buttons, the ALPHA WHEEL and/or NUMERIC buttons to designate the User ID # to save your Multi to (User ID range = 1025-2048).Press the SAVE button to finalize the saving of your Multi:

    Done.

  10. To later recall this Multi, press MULTI (if not already in Multi mode), then Press USER and use the PREVIOUS / NEXT buttons, the ALPHA WHEEL and/or NUMERIC buttons to call up the ID chosen in step 9 above.

    TIP: You can also opt to save this Multi as a Favorite for even quicker recall.


Power User Tips:

Once you have built your basic Multi, you may want to refine it further by EDITing the Multi directly. To start select your Multi, then press EDIT.

    • To create more Multis in this same vein (templates):
      – As needed, press the CHANNEL/PAGE up or down buttons to navigate to the Main page (1/11). Use the PREVIOUS or NEXT buttons to select the desired zone, then use the ALPHA WHEEL and/or keypad to change the Program selection. For ex., below we are changing our zone 2 sound to 219 MiniFunk:

      – Repeat for additional zones as needed.
