Answer:

All references to the “PC3” apply equally to both the PC3, PC3K and X-Pro models.

1) Connect a 75-Ohm coaxial RCA cable from the PC3’s RCA Digital Out jack to the S/PDIF or AES* input of the receiving device.

2) Connect a 75-Ohm coaxial RCA cable from the Master Clock device’s S/PDIF or AES/EBU* Out jack to the PC3’s “Sync In” RCA jack.

(TIP: *you may need RCA-to-XLR adapters to connect with your other devices, depending on their connectors. If the other devices you are interfacing with only offer optical connections, you’ll need a converter.)

3) On the PC3, press the Master mode button, then press [OUTPUT]:

4) The PC3 can sync to rates ranging from 20 to 220kHz. Three ranges are offered: Ext 20-60k, Ext 60-120k and Ext 120-220kHz. Set the output sample rate (Dig. Out) to one of the external rate ranges, encompassing the rate you are going to send to the PC3:

5) Set the Digital Out Volume (Dig. out volume) to either “Variable” or “Fixed”:

Question:
I’d like to route a KB3 program to the Aux outs but also disable the internal leslie effect as I plan on connecting into an external leslie/sim. How can this be done?

Answer:
All output routing occurs at the program level. So, to begin:

1) (optional) Start by reading the “Routing Programs to the Auxiliary Outputs” tutorial to see how to edit a program’s basic output assignment. This will route the KB3 program, in its entirety (incl. FX), to the Aux outs.To then disable the leslie and cabinet simulation, continue below:

2) On the [PROGFX] page, highlight the current effects chain.

 

3) Press Edit. You will see:

4) Using the cursor buttons, highlight the FX block named “KB3b” and press [Remove] (depending on the specific effect chain, this block may be in varying positions and/or you may see two instances (if 2 KB3b blocks are present, remove each). In the example here, it is FX block 2).

KB3b creates the leslie portion of the effects process. Removing it thus disables the internal leslie.

In addition to removing the leslie, you will likely also want to disable the internal cabinet simulation as well, which is a separate process (generated by one or possibly two KB3a blocks). This will produce or truer, more balanced tone for your external amp/sim to work with, especially if you are running mono. The KB3a block however generates more than just the cabinet effect (also handling the vibrato/chorus circuit and distortion elements), so we cannot simply remove it entirely in this instance.

5) To disable just the cabinet simulation portion of the KB3a effect, check the [MOD1 ], [MOD2 ] and/or [MOD3 ] pages for a free unused FX MOD. Here in our example the first free MOD could be found on the [MOD 2 ] page.

6) Assign any free MOD you find to “Cab In/Out” as pictured below:

Note Box1 is chosen as this corresponds to FX Box 1, which is KB3a in our example. Assign the “Param:” to Cab In/Out and “Adjust” to Out. This will disable the cabinet sim. If the FX Chain you are editing has two KB3b blocks you will need to create another/similar MOD for disabling the cabinet sim in that separate FX box as well.

7) Press Exit and Save your tweaked effect chain.

8) Press Exit and Save again to save the final Program, now using your custom effect chain.

You have now routed a KB3 sound to the Aux outs, minus the leslie and cabinet simulation but have left the other KB3 performance features intact, such as drawbar controls, vibrato/chorus circuit and any tube distortion that may be employed.

How can I route select layers of a given program to the Aux outs?

Answer:
By default all factory Program layers are routed to the primary, Main L & R Outputs. The PC3, however, features a secondary pair of analog outs named “Auxiliary” (Aux) that you can reroute signals to as needed. The PC3 architecture supports routing entire programs to the separate outs (see “Routing Programs to the Auxiliary Outputs”) as well as isolating select layers within a program and sending those alone to the aux outs.

This could come in handy for situations where you may want external control over the mix of certain elements within a program. Take for example a drum kit where you may want to isolate just the kick from the rest of the kit or perhaps a program that combines a layer of strings with piano. By routing specified layers to their own output, you can then run these into separate inputs of an external mixer or multitrack recorder for further control and/or processing.

Here are the basic steps for routing individual layers of a program to the Aux/Secondary outputs:

1) In Program Mode, select desired program (for this example we are using program “135 Perfect PnoPad”). This is a Piano and Pad combination sound with the pad on layer 1. We’ll route Layer 1 to the aux outs, leaving the piano sound coming out the Main outs.

2) Press Edit, you will see:

4) Press [LYR_FX]

5) Notice, the Layer FX Mode is set to “Use Program FX”, which means this layer (layer 1/3) is currently set to use the same Insert FX Chain, Aux Send Levels and Output as all of the other layers in this program (as set on the Program-Effects [PROGFX] page).

6) By changing the Layer FX Mode to “Layer-Specific FX”** a new independent set of FX and Output parameters appear that allow you to now isolate and control this one layer’s FX and Output routing independently from any other layers.

7) Now to route this layer to the aux outs, set Output to “Sec.”.

Done. Layer 1 will now sound out of the Auxiliary outs and the remaining layers (2 & 3 in this example) will continue to sound, separately out of the Main outs.

8) Press Exit and save the program

**NOTE: when you enable Layer-Specific FX Mode, the Insert chain for this layer is cleared (Set to “0 None”). This means if the program itself had an insert assigned (as globally set on the PROGFX page) that the layer in question now has no insert effect applied to it. Additionally the Aux send level will now initially be set to off. (In our example here, the program happened to not have an insert but did have a small amount of reverb applied on Aux 1. Take a peek on the PROGFX page to see.)

As you are routing things externally you may simply opt to leave things this way and effect this feed externally. Alternatively, you could also choose to dial up the same Effects Insert Chain here and/or increase the Aux send to any desirable amount – or – even dial up all new effects for this layer (resources permitting).

The PC3 allows you to send a program’s aux FX returns out separate outputs split from the programs main audio signal path. As the Aux FX are typically used for traditional reverb/delay sends, doing so is a great way to run the FX only feed into external mixer channels for blending.

Here’s how:

  1. Start by reading the “Routing Programs to the Auxiliary Outputs” tutorial for an overview of the basic routing process.
  2. From this, you will see each program offers three distinct Output parameter controls (per layer if desired).The main signal path, along with any assigned FX insert chain, has its own Output control:

  3. To route your program’s audio (minus Aux FX) to one set of outs and your Aux FX returns to another, simply set one to “Main” and the other to “Sec.”

Question:
My PC3 seems to have lower output level than my other gear. How can I compensate for that?

Answer:
The first thing to realize is our units are unlike any other. The V.A.S.T. architecture within the PC3 supports up to 32 layers PER program (in series and/or parallel), 16 programs system wide (one per channel), at the same time. The headroom requirement to handle such demanding sound generation is substantial. In short this means that on average, the overall output gain is lower (perhaps when compared to some synths) to accommodate all of the potential sound programming possibilities (read amplitude) within the unit.

In addition, if you are using the analog outs, another important aspect to look at in optimizing levels is whether you are running balanced or unbalanced connections. In brief, although the PC3 supports both balanced and unbalanced connections, balanced connections will generally provide you much better signal level and improved signal-to-noise ratio over unbalanced ones. So if/when possible use balanced* connections for optimal sound output.

*Note: this means not only using balanced 1/4″ cables at the PC3 end, but the gear into which you are connecting must ALSO offer balanced inputs. In other words, if the device you are connecting into only offers unbalanced inputs, simply using a balanced cable alone will not provide you with any benefits. The cables must be balanced (TRS variety) and the inputs of the device to which you are connecting must also be balanced in order to qualify.

With all that said, if in what you are personally doing you still find you need more level, there are two easy ways to adjust things:

  1. MIDI Volumes – be certain you are setting levels appropriately to maximize your mix (i.e. whatever element is loudest in your selection of sounds, make it MIDI volume 127, then mix the other sounds in use down from there.)MIDI volumes can be set within the PC3 (like on the MIDI [CHANLS], Setup [PANVOL] and Song Mode pages) or externally in your DAW or controller.
  2. if (1) above is not enough you can then adjust the overall global output level is by way of the Master FX section:
    1. press the EFFECT mode button

    2. press [MASTER]

    3. highlight the last (rightmost) DSP block in the effect chain – in our example here that is the [EQ ] block

    4. press EDIT, and cautiously set the ‘OutGain’ to taste – in our example we bumped the output +6dB.

    5. press EXIT twice to return to Program Mode

To store any MASTER EFFECTS changes, when using them globally, press Master, then press the SAVE soft button.

TIPS:

Individual Song/ Setup Customization:

Realize too if you wish to make such gain adjustments (not even talking about using the effects themselves yet) on a per Song or per Setup basis (i.e. if you are using the onboard Sequencer or Setup Mode) you have the ability to assign individual, custom Master FX to each Song/Setup object in memory.

For Song Mode: go to Song and select the soft button [MASTFX] to access, set Mode to ‘Song’ and tweak similarly as shown above.

For Setup Mode: go to Setup, select the desired Setup, press EDIT, select the soft button [MASTFX] to access, set Mode to ‘Setup’ and tweak similarly as shown above.

So not right or wrong, just a suggestion… if you are looking to make a quick overall adjustment in the entire unit’s output, then approach things from the EFFECT/[Master] menu. This would be ideal for temporarily bumping the output on a gig or perhaps for dumping parts to your DAW/recorder.

If, on the other hand, you wish to tailor such tweaks only to a given Song/Setup, independent from the rest of the unit, approach things via the Song or Setup/[MASTFX] page instead and save these settings with the select Song/Setup. This method permits all sorts of gain and mastering FX tweaks (if so desired) that are recallable per song/setup object.
