The SP2X/S receives its system updates through MIDI sys-ex (i.e. playing a specified MIDI file containing system exclusive data into its MIDI in port and/or via MIDI-over-USB.) Details on how to update your SP2 system files can be found in the SP2 Musician's Guide in Chapter 6.
Update Requirements / RecommendationsWindows Users:
- If you are updating from OS v1.08:
Follow the instructions located in Chpt 6 of the SP2 Musician's Guide. Alternatively you can simply use traditional MIDI connections to update your OS.
- If you are updating from OS v1.07 or older:
To update via USB from v1.07 or older, Windows XP must be used. Follow the instructions located in Chpt 6 of the SP2 Musician's Guide. Alternatively you can simply use traditional MIDI connections to update your OS. Once updated, both Vista and XP can be used for future updates over USB.
NOTE: (recommended for XP users) "SP2Series.inf" XP driver (available on Kurzweil's website). The installation of this driver permits your host DAW to reference the SP2 by name versus a generic, standard driver label. Unnecessary for Vista.
Mac OSX Users:
- v1.01 of the "Boot Block" (SP2BootV101.mid) is required for USB updating functionality (included in this download). If you are currently running less than v1.01 of the boot block (the boot block version number is displayed on screen upon entering the boot block menu), you must update the boot block via traditional MIDI connections first before you can use USB to update the OS. Alternatively you can simply use traditional MIDI connections to update your OS and not use USB at all.
- NO OSX driver required
Note: We normally recommend doing a Hard Reset after performing an upgrade. Therefore, if you have any user created Programs or Setups, you should do a system exclusive back up dump of the memory before updating. Please read "Dumping Objects" on page 5-4 of the Musician's Guide for more info.
Version 1.08
- Vista USB - compatibility added. Note: no driver required when using Vista.
Version 1.07
- Fixes transpose bug introduced in v1.06 where transpose values were all in whole steps.
Version 1.06
New Features:
- 1. MIDI destination per zone - allows the routing of MIDI data per zone to be either internal only (local), external only (MIDI) or Internal and External (both). Zones are set to "both" by default.
Procedure:
- Press Edit button
- Press Vel.Range or Transpose button
- Press World button
- Use up, down and/or keypad to select "Loc" (Local), "Mid" (MIDI) or "Bot" (Both)
Changes:
- Windows XP users (Vista not yet supported):
v1.06 implements a new USB device ID. This requires the use of a NEW device installer when connecting the SP2 and your PC (XP only) together via USB. Please visit http://www.kurzweilmusicsystems.com/Downloads.php, select your SP2 model, and download the latest device installer: " SP2SeriesV106.inf "
- Edit Mode:
In previous versions, pressing the Main, Layer or Split buttons automatically forced the SP2 into Edit mode (Edit button lit red). This caused some users confusion. To simplify things, this behavior has been changed such that Edit mode will ONLY be entered into if the Edit button is manually pressed. This also facilitates getting in/out of the Rhythm select mode when a layer/split is active as well as distinguishing between the global and per-zone transpose functionality.
- Main, Layer and Split Mute operation:
In previous versions a given zone was muted when you pressed the corresponding zone button once (Main, Layer, Split). To match the behavior of other Kurzweil products and to better support the updated Edit mode behavior (#2 above) now a given zone is muted only if it is first current on screen (i.e. last selected). Otherwise, pressing a zone button first selects the given zone (making it current on screen), and a 2nd press would then mute the zone.Bugs Fixed:
- External MIDI out path - Program Mode
In previous versions, in Program mode, MIDI data was not being sent to the MIDI out port when Layer and Split zones were enabled (ie their MIDI destinations were permanently fixed as Local). In v1.06 they still default to zone destinations of Local (Loc) but can now be altered to MIDI (Mid) or Both (Bot) per the new MIDI destination feature added (see New Features - above).
- Sustain pedal on/off selection per zone was broken. It is now fixed, such that in Edit mode, every time you press&hold "knob mode" and step on the sustain pedal, it toggles the sustain pedal on/off for the currently selected zone.
- Metronome tempo was not remembered consistently between starts/stops. This was improved.
- Improved Guitar preset tuning.
- The volumes for sound presets N17, N18, N54 were adjusted to better match the levels of other presets.
- BPM tempo not accurate - fixed.
- Rhythms "hiccup" while changing setups on the fly - improved.
- In Setup Edit, the "Split Point" double-button press appeared to allow changes to the split point even though this is a Program mode feature only. This has been fixed. Altering a zone's key range is now correctly only allowed by way of the "Key Range" edit parameter from within the Setup Editor.
Version 1.02
- added new demo song and tweaked setup voicing
Version 1.01
- direct USB functionality added for Mac OSX
Version 1.00
- initial SP2X OS release
